Another beautiful winter day in the Rockies!  The sun is shining, the temperature is supposed to go up to 55!  I am going to go
hiking this afternoon – as soon as I finish work.  It is just too nice to be inside!  I hope that wherever you are, you are able to get out and enjoy the winter.  And don’t forget to eat some of that lovely dark Valentine’s chocolate – so good for us – so full of antioxidants – yeah – that’s why I eat it (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)!                                                                                                               Peace, Nancy   Massage News

If you find yourself indulging in some strenuous activities this lovely winter season, take care.  However, if you should strain/sprain anything, here is some good advice from Better Nutrition.   As soon as you can, apply cold packs for 20 minutes to reduce swelling.  Then use contrast therapy.  Contrast therapy alternates hot and cold packs increases the blood flow to the injured area, causes pain modulators to be flushed from the injury site and dealt with in other parts of the body, and can speed the body’s healing process.  An hour after the first cold pack application, apply a hot pack for 2 minutes, then a cold pack for 30 seconds to 1 minute, another hot pack for 2 minutes, and another cold pack for 30 seconds to 1 minutes.  Repeat this 4 step process one more time.  You can do this again after an hour or so.  And of course, come in for a massage once the injury is no longer in its acute stage . . .   Essential Oils Tip

In addition to using contrast therapy, essential oils can help the body enhance its healing processes.  For sprained joints, ginger, rosemary, nutmeg, lemongrass, and wintergreen are helpful.  For strained muscles, marjoram, cypress, basil, Believe, PanAway, and AromaSiez can bring relief and help soften those knotted sore spots.   Health Tip –   Tangerines and Heart Health

Since organic tangerines are so plentiful and tasty this time of year, I thought that you might appreciate this health tip from www.realage.com.   Here's a twist on citrus: tangerines may help make your heart healthier. In a study, the juice of tangerines was revealed to have an even higher polyphenol content than the juice from oranges or grapefruit. Research suggests the polyphenols found in these citrus fruits may help protect against atherosclerosis, a disease of the circulatory system.   February’s Essential Oil – Vetiver

I have just been reacquainted with Vetiver.  This has a very earthy aroma that reminds me of the way Ireland smells in the winter with all the peat fires burning.  Pungent, smoky, yummy.  (Can you tell I like this scent?)  It is a relative of citronella and lemongrass.  Vetiver is called the Oil of Tranquility in India.  I first began using it for its ability to help our body and mind calm down, let go of stress, and sleep restfully.  It is also very grounding, which is logical as it is distilled from the roots of a grass that grows in India and Haiti.  Historically, Vetiver has been used as a perfume, for anxiety and nervousness, in skin care (especially for aging and wrinkled skin), to help with arthritis symptoms, and to help recover from trauma and shock.   Now I am using Vetiver for muscle and joint sprains and strains.  I use it regularly in my massage practice, on myself, and on Bob.  I have added it to the blends I make up for muscle, tendon, and ligament support and healing.  I use it neat and I dilute it with vegetable or nut oil.  I massage it right on the area of concern for tissue healing.  I use it in Raindrop Treatments by dropping it along the spine and feathering it into the body.  I also massage it on the bottoms of my feet when I am a bit stressed at bedtime.   A little Vetiver goes a long way.  Only few drops are generally needed, in massage and in blends.  It is a potent essential oil.  As I believe in using oils safely, here a few cautions:  If you are pregnant, this is an oil that you would want to use with caution – only a little and well diluted.  It is also not recommended for children under the age of 6 and it is recommended that it be diluted for children over the age of 6.   For the rest of us, enjoy this earthy essential oil!  Vetiver comes in a 5 ml bottle and costs $13.00 for Preferred Customers and $11.00 for Wholesale Distributors.   Specials from Young Living
