March 2005 Newsletter
  Home
Well, time is certainly flying by!  I cannot believe that it is already March 28th!  This newsletter was supposed to be written . . .
oh well.  It is a beautiful day in Boulder (of course ‘they’ say it might snow tomorrow!).  It must be at least 70 degrees, the sun is
out, and I am at my desk.  But it’s OK as I was out with my horse this morning trying to remove another 10 pounds of winter
hair!  Spring is in the air and it is wonderful!

I would like to take a moment to share a bit of information about an awesome art exhibit that, hopefully, will be traveling around
the country later this year.  Faces of the Fallen (
facesofthefallen.org) is a compelling exhibit of more than 1300 individual
portraits honoring America’s service men and women who lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq. Talented artists from across
the country have donated these works, which are on display to the public through November 11, 2005 at the
Women in Military
Service for America Memorial
.   My son-in-law is one of those honored in this exhibit. (SFC Daniel Aaron Romero, in case you
want to check his portrait out.)  It is quite an amazing labor of respect and love!

Massage News

This may be of more interest to other massage therapists, but I think you all might find it of use.  I have started using
Thieves Household Cleaner as an additive in my washer.  It is really helpful for getting oil stains (and other potential stains as
well) out of my massage sheets and my clothes, too.  It has also taken the smell of ‘old oil’ out of the sheets!  I only use a
tablespoon or so per load, but that seems to be enough.  (Thieves Cleaner is available from Young Living Essential Oils.)

Health Tip –    Music with Exercise Benefits Your Brain

In a study of cardiac patients in rehabilitation, exercise sessions were done with classical music and without.  Ohio
State University researchers discovered that verbal fluency test scores improved significantly after exercising with music.  No
cognitive change was noted after the tune-less exercise session.  So, it you want to experience cognitive benefits, try adding
music to your workout!

Essential Oils Tip – Peppermint and Exercise

Did you know that peppermint essential oil can help boost your energy during exercise?  You can inhale it before and
during a workout to increase your positive mood and reduce fatigue.  And since it has been proven to increase brain function,
if you listen to music while working out (see above), just think how your cognitive benefits will multiply!

March’s Essential Oil – PanAway

I have been using a lot of PanAway lately, to help with a slightly sprained knee. As I thought about all the oils I could write about
for this spring newsletter – all those lovely flowery scents – I kept coming back to PanAway.  This is a very, very powerful blend.
It contains essential oils that are known to help the body deal with pain, inflammation, quick healing through increased
oxygenation, and bruising.  It is useful for sciatica, arthritis, sports injuries, muscle spasms, and sprains.  I use PanAway for its
healing and pain relieving properties.  It contains:

Wintergreen – 99% methyl salicylate, helps with muscle, bone, and joint healing/pain

Helichrysum – helps with circulation, inflammation, , pain, tissue damage, a POWERFUL healing oil

Clove – helps with infection, inflammation, is a topical anesthetic

Peppermint – helps with inflammation, damaged tissue

It can be applied in a compress, blended with vegetable or nut oil and massaged on, or, as I usually do – can be dropped on
the skin and massaged in.  I really do notice a difference in how my knee, or other strained/sprained are feels.  The pain
dissipates and sprains heal faster than they used to.

When I was a girl, I fell into that category that we used to call “tom-boy”.  My life was full of lots of activity, lots of running around,
playing Frisbee and softball, riding horses and bicycles, lots of climbing trees, and unfortunately, lots of falling out of trees and
off bicycles and horses.  I often landed on my knees – ouch!  Now that I am decades removed from that little girl, I am paying
for all that twisting, falling, and ‘torquing’!  I make up a blend for my knees recommended by Dr. David Stewart:  equal parts of
PanAway, Cypress, and Wintergreen.  I massage a drop of this on both knees morning and night.  It really makes a difference
– one that I notice when my blend bottle is empty and it takes me a week to refill it.  The pain comes back (although each time I
go off it, the pain is a bit less).  Once I start the blend again, the pain goes away!

Yes, it is really spelled PanAway, not PainAway – guess that was taken when it was named!  Because it has helichrysum in it,
PanAway is rather pricey, but I feel it is worth every penny!  Especially when I think about how it is going to keep my knees
from needing reconstructive surgery!
