Whatever I was planning to write has been replaced by an amazing allergy attack!  Yesterday I went for a quick walk
and came home with stuffed sinuses, runny eyes, and lots of sneezes!  Something must have burst into bloom that my body does not like.  So, I have spent some time researching and remembering (from years past) how I can help myself get over this – relieve symptoms, deal with the underlying issues/causes, and feel fine again!  I do hope you don’t have issues with allergies, but if you do, read on . . . .               And to the rest of you, enjoy this lovely spring – the daffodils and crocuses were lovely, the tulips are gorgeous (and the deer aren’t eating mine this year, so I have actually seen the flowers), and the irises are on their way!                                                                                                   Peace, Nancy   Nancy’s Adventure with Spring Allergies!
  ‘Decongestant Capsules’

I often take essential oils internally, as a part of my wellness routine.  Now I have added two blends that are known for helping to open breathing passages and reduce sinus congestion.  The recipe for the milder one is:  2-3 drops tea tree (melaleuca), 5 drops eucalyptus radiata, and 9-10 drops peppermint essential oils.  I drop these into a Size 0 get cap (available at Wild Oats, Vitamin Cottage, etc.) and take with 6-8 ounces of water.  The stronger recipe is:  5 drops each of myrtle, eucalyptus radiata, black pepper, and goldenrod essential oils in a Size 00 (more room than the Size 0) gel cap.  Again, I take it with plenty of water.  I determine which blend to use based on how stuffy I feel!  I generally take these on a fairly empty stomach – I think they work better for me that way.  These are all oils that are determined to be GRAS (generally regarded as safe for internal use).    Nasal Inhaler

In keeping with my theme of how to help myself deal with allergies and their related symptoms, here is a recipe I found for a homemade Nasal Inhaler (‘Aromatherapy’ by Keville & Green):  2 drops eucalyptus (globulus), 2 drops rosemary, 1 drop peppermint essential oils and a little rock salt.  Place a few pieces of rock salt in a vial and add the oils.  The salt will absorb the oils.  Open the vial and inhale as needed.   In the Shower

I put a drop of Raven (another blend for the respiratory system) on my chest before I get in the shower.  The hot water helps the oil to penetrate my skin and I get a little whiff of Raven while showering.   April’s Essential Oil –RC
I am using ‘buckets’ of R.C. this month!  R.C. is a blend of essential oils formulated to help us cope with the symptoms
of colds, allergies, sinusitis, sore throat, coughs, respiratory congestion, and flu.  It can also be helpful with cold sores and bone spurs.   R.C. contains:
Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus radiata, Eucalyptus australiana, Eucalyptus citriodora – helps respiratory system fight off bacteria and virus; helps open up sinuses and nasal passages           Myrtle – known as a decongestant of the respiratory system           Pine – helps dilate and open up respiratory system, especially the bronchial tract; helps improve circulation in the lungs           Spruce – helps dilate bronchial tract which improves the oxygen exchange           Marjoram – may help relieve spasms in respiratory tract; relaxing and calming to muscles that, when constricted, can lead to headaches           Lavender – is known for helping the body to find balance and work wherever it is needed           Cypress – may help with circulation in the lungs and relieve respiratory problems           Peppermint – soothing, cooling and helps the body deal with inflammation     Suggested applications:
Diffuse or use in a humidifier.
To clear sinuses, put a couple of drops in a bowl of steaming (not boiling!) hot water, put a towel over one’s head and inhale deeply.           Apply to chest, neck, around ears, and bottoms of the feet.           Use as a hot compress.           Put on pillow at night (I tried this on the dog bed one night when Zeus had a bit of a respiratory problem.  He was not thrilled with the scent on his bed and spent quite a lot of time rolling around to replace it with his own.  However, his breathing improved!)           Massage 1 drop over sinus cavities on face (I do this at bedtime as my eyes water if I get it too close to them.)           Put one or two drops on a cotton ball, put in plastic bag, open and inhale as needed.           Put one or two drops on a cotton ball, place cotton next to your pillow at night or between the pillow and the pillow case           For a stuffy nose, put a drop on a cotton swab and rub inside nostrils.           And my favorite – open the bottle, hold it under one’s nose, and inhale deeply!   R.C. can be alternated effectively with Thieves and Raven.
