May-June 2005 Newsletter
  Home
I cannot believe that so much time has passed since my last newsletter.  Spring has been flying by!  I do love the long
days and the beautiful irises and other flowers in my front yard.  My vegetable garden is doing well (thanks, Eva, for all the
lovely plants) and the perennial herbs are growing lushly.   But enough chat – here is the newsletter, before I get distracted
again!!

Essential Oil Tip for May/June – Lavender and Sunburn

If you should find yourself with a bit of sunburn at the end of one of these lovely, bright days, massage a little lavender essential
oil onto the area.  Lavender is very soothing to burns and to skin.  If you like, you can mix several drops in a natural lotion or
aloe vera gel, for soothing after-sun skin care.

Essential Oils and Insects (it is that time of year!)

Insect Repellants:  As the days get warmer and the rain continues to fall, I am finding more reasons to make up my essential
oil insect repellants.  I have one blend for horses (email/call me if you are interested in the recipe) and several that I use on
myself.  Here are a couple of essential oil recipes for Insect Repellant Concentrates for people:
Recipe #1:

2 drops Cedarwood                    5 drops peppermint                   3 drops lavender

3 drops eucalyptus globulus       4 drops melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree)

1 drop clove                                  2 drops geranium                      A little aloe gel

Recipe #2:

6 drops peppermint                    6 drops lemon

6 drops lemongrass                    6 drops eucalyptus radiata

For
both:  Add concentrate to 2 ounces of distilled water in a spray bottle.  Can be sprayed on skin and on clothes.   Shake
well before use.  Avoid eyes.

                                    Or

Add concentrate to 4 ounces almond oil (or other type of nut/vegetable oil) to massage on skin.  May last longer than the
water-based spray, but will stain clothes.  Shake well before use.  Avoid eyes.

Peppermint essential oil can be used on its own to keep ants, mosquitoes, flies, etc., away.  Purification essential oil blend
has been known to repel bees, flies, and mosquitoes.  Either of these can be massaged directly on the skin or mixed with
distilled water or oil and used as in the above recipes. For ants in your home, you can dilute peppermint oil by putting it in a
spray bottle with water and spray areas where they are getting in.

One reference book suggests making a spray of 5 drops of
Purification and 5 drops of Lemon oil in 2 ounces of distilled
water to help repel wasps and other insects.  A friend told me she uses
Purification spray to repel Miller’s moths as well.

Insect Bites:  A drop of
Purification on an insect bite may help draw out/neutralize the poison.  This can be repeated until the
sting/swelling lessens.  I also keep a glass spray bottle of
Purification and distilled water to use when a spray is more
convenient.  I use about 10 drops in 4 ounces of water – however the amount can be adjusted depending on the use.

Lavender is one oil that I always have with me so I can put it on any bite; it seems to help the histamines in the skin relax a bit.

I found this recipe to for insect bites, skin irritation and itching:

Blend 5 drops
lavender, 3 drops Roman chamomile, 1 drop geranium, and 3 drops rose in one ounce of vegetable or oil
and apply externally as needed.  Rose essential oil is very expensive, so I am going to try this one without the rose.

And once, a few years ago, while out on a boat, I was stung on a finger by a bee.  The only oil I had in my back pack, for some
reason, was
Peace & Calming.  I put this on the finger, after a few minutes - iced it, added more Peace & Calming, waited a
few minutes – iced it again.  I repeated this several times until we got back to shore (and the rest of my oils), a couple of hours
later.  I then used peppermint, lavender, and anything else that I had with me.  Within a few hours, the swelling was down.
Within 24 hours, there was no swelling at all.  Moral of this story – use whatever you have with you and it will probably work!

Hopefully you won’t be stung or bit by any little critters this summer, but if you are . . . . . . . . . . . . .
