March 2006 Newsletter
  Home
I write this newsletter on the first day of spring.  And to celebrate, a snow storm has arrived in Colorado!  We got lucky
and only have about half of what was predicted (4-6 inches so far).  As I will have to shovel soon, I am pleased that we didn’t
get the predicted foot-plus!  Several of my hardier bulbs burst into flower last week.  I feel fortunate that I got to see them for a
day or two!  The moisture is appreciated and needed.  And it reminds me that spring here is unlike the springs I grew up with
in Illinois.  Springtime in the Rockies has its own special flavor – wet, snowy, and wonderful!  I hope you have a happy Vernal
Equinox.

Essential Oil Tip for March

I was on a fairly toxic airplane last Friday night.  Lots of sick, sneezing, coughing people – you get the picture.  When I
woke up Saturday morning, I had that sore throat that can be a forerunner of a cold or other noxious infection.  I grabbed my
bottle of
Melaleuca alternifolia (also known as Tea Tree) essential oil.  There is a recommended routine for using Melaleuca
to stave off infections in the throat and sinus areas:  Place a little on a finger and then put it in my mouth, swish it around and
swallow.  I repeat this every 10 minutes for an hour (or at least several times) and then do it as needed throughout the day (and
for days afterwards if needed).  It really helps to take that “I am coming down with something” feeling away.  (from Natural
Home Health Care by the Penoels).  Two days later, I am still using it occasionally, but really feel a lot better!

March’s Oil Blend – Believe

Believe is one of my (long list) favorite oils!  It is a blend of Idaho balsam fir, frankincense, and rosewood.  It is another
of the “all-purpose” oils – good for helping the body deal with stress, muscle soreness, gout, and inflammation.
Believe supports the circulatory, immune, and respiratory systems.

One of the reasons I like
Believe is that it combines balsam fir and frankincense oils.  Frankincense is a powerful oil.  It
has a very high frequency (a measurable rate of electrical energy).  Lower frequencies are associated with disease and
negative moods.  The human body generally has a frequency of 62 to 68 megahertz (MHz) during the day.  Cold symptoms
can lower this to 58 MHz; cancer can have a frequency of 42 MHz.   Essential oils’ frequencies range from 52 – 320 MHz.
Meditation and prayer have also been found to increase measured frequency levels.  An essential oil like Frankincense can
boost our body’s frequency through inhalation, topical application, and so forth.

The French use balsam fir essential oil for relieving pain, inflammation, burns, cuts, arthritis, as an antibiotic, etc.  There
is a French study that shows that it inhibits growth in certain breast cancer cell lines.  In addition, balsam fir helps the body
deal with colds, flu, nervous tension, reducing pain, and wound healing.  It is very soothing for stressed and overused muscles,
tendons, ligaments, and joints.  I have been using it on a sprained ankle and am getting a good bit of relief from the
inflammation and pain.  (If I would stay off of my ankle, I am sure it would be healing faster!)  It has been shown, in some recent
studies, to help the body reduce cortisol levels (an adrenal cortex hormone).  Appropriate amounts of cortisol help with proper
glucose metabolism, blood pressure regulation, inflammatory response, and immune function.  More is secreted when we are
in a stressful situation.  It gives us a burst of energy (when the fight or flight response kicks in), a burst of increased immunity,
and a lower sensitivity to pain.   If we find that our lives become continually stressful, we are unable to relax and the cortisol
levels do not return to ‘normal’.   Sustained high levels in cortisol have been shown to have negative effects on the body,
including higher blood pressure, lower immunity, blood sugar imbalances, suppressed thyroid function, lower cognitive
functioning, and increased abdominal fat.  I have been looking for something to help reduce my cortisol levels and now am
using
Believe daily, especially at bedtime.

Rosewood essential oil is known for its ability to help the skin; soothing it; creating elasticity; slowing the aging
process; wound healing; tissue regeneration; and dealing with acne.  Aromatically, it helps the body relax and gentles the mind.

            I use
Believe often!  I put it on my own tense, tired muscles.  In fact, I use it in most of my massages, alone or with
some Marjoram, to ‘untie’ those knots I find in people’s muscles.  I inhale it and massage it on my temples, neck, and at the
base of my skull when I have a headache.  I sniff it when I am driving to stay alert.  When I need a boost of self confidence, I put
some on my wrists and inhale it.  I massage it on my feet at bedtime.   I also diffuse it – it smells heavenly and makes me feel
like I am walking in a beautiful, peaceful forest!
