Blending Essential Oils

Essential Oils Blends

Essential oils can be used singly, layered (one after the other), and as blends.  I like to create my own blends and there are
several ready-made blends that I like to purchase.

When making my own blends, there are several guidelines that I follow:

  -  Work out my recipe before I start

  -  Have all supplies ready before beginning

  -  Use clean dark glass bottles (I like 5/6 dram, 5 ml, and 15 ml sizes)

  -  Clearly label each blend

  -  Make small batches, especially the first time I make a particular blend

  -  I measure my oils by the drop, rather than by the milliliter or dram

  -  The order that the oils go in the blend is key to keeping the therapeutic properties of all the oils in the blend

  -  Some blends need a carrier oil, such as jojoba, almond, wheat germ or other vegetable or nut oil – I always use organic,
cold pressed oils

I do use some ready-made blends of essential oils.  They are pure, therapeutic-grade, steam distilled, and carefully blended to
retain all of the constituents of each essential oil in the blend.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Abundance
Believe
Di-Tone
Joy
Peace & Calming
Raven
Sacred Mountain
Thieves
Valor

Information on blending essential oils can be found in many books. I do keep in mind that those written from the English
aromatherapist’s view say that one should always use a carrier oil when blending essential oils.  I often just use a blend of
essential oils, as I am more inclined to the French and US schools of aromatherapy.  Some of my favorites are:

Aromatherapy for Women
Aromatherapy Blends & Remedies
The Essential Oils Book: Creating Personal Blends for Mind & Body The Reference Guide for Essential Oils
