Peppermint
  Home
What can I say – Peppermint is one of the essential oils I use the most.  It has a reputation for soothing the digestive system,
cooling the internal temperature of the body, soothing nerves, keeping the mind alert, and freshen the breath.  In France,
Peppermint is used to help with respiratory and digestive system conditions, hot flashes, fevers, migraines, and headaches.
One drop of Peppermint essential oil gives the same benefit as drinking 23 cups of peppermint tea.  It is potent stuff!

Aromatically, Peppermint purifies and stimulates the mind.  Research by Dr. Dembar of the University of Cincinnati showed
that inhaling peppermint essential oil while studying and then during a test increased the students’ accuracy by up to 28%.

Suggested applications:

I put a drop in water and drink it, especially when out of town and the water tastes ‘odd’ and in the summer when I want to cool
off.  I sometimes put a drop on my tongue and hold it up against the roof of my mouth (it helps to clear my sinuses, freshens my
breath, cools me down, wakes me up, etc.).  I put it on my dog’s tummy when he acts like it is upset.  I put it on the back of my
neck when at the barn in the summertime – it feels like an ice pack after a minute or two.  I rub it on my abdomen if I am feeling
digestive distress.  I put several drops in a capsule to get a more concentrated amount of it into my stomach and intestines.

I recently learned that Peppermint is good to put on burns, with Lavender, when the burn is two days old or so – it would really
sting at first.  I tried this, after reading about it in one of my reference books, when I burned the tender skin on my forearm on a
very hot baking pan.  I used Lavender extensively for two days, then added a bit of Peppermint several times a day after that.
It stung a little, and then created a cooling sensation all around the burned area.

Sometimes I use Peppermint on sore muscles, stressed nerves, and when I find inflamed tissue during massages, on
humans, horses, and dogs.  This is an essential oil I don’t leave home without!
